Head coach: Gerald Barnes (eighth season)
Colors: Red, white and blue
Home field (est. capacity): The Battlefield (6,000)
Gameday tradition: The Patriots all touch a large boulder before taking the field. The players began that tradition more than 20 years ago with coach Don Fendley in an area of shell rock near where the players traveled along their pre-game routines.
Year school opened: 1970
Main rival: Richmond Academy
2003 record: 4-7, 4-2 region; lost at Swainsboro 39-0 in first round of the Class AAA playoffs
Three-year record: 22-12
Last region title: 2000
State titles: None
Last playoff appearance: 2003
Last NCAA Division I-A player: PK Obi Egekeze (Maryland) 2004
Roster breakdown: 16 seniors, 13 juniors, 16 sophomores, 17 freshmen
Returning starters: 7 offense, 4 defense
Key Patriots: Senior LB Jay Tarver (6-3, 210), senior WR Eric Taylor (6-2, 195), senior OG Troy Koone (5-11, 190), junior OL James Watkins (6-0, 230), senior OL Antwon Cooper (6-1, 240).
Offensive coordinator: Bill Sherman (seventh season)
Defensive coordinator: Carlton Thompson (eighth season)
Offensive attack: Westside still runs the I-formation, but instead of one big tailback the team will utilize a crew of small, fast runners. Sophomores Virgil Brown (5-11, 170) and Marvin Bussey (5-10, 175), junior Sergio Campbell (5-10, 155) and senior FB Tristan Jackson (5-10, 180) will form that group. Taylor will be the go-to receiver.
Defensive keys: Linebackers Tarver and Junior Jon Wiley (5-11, 185) are the heart of this defense. Westside has also improved at end and tackle.
Special teams glance: The kicking game is all new. Taylor and Williams are the likely kick returners. Bussey will kick off and handle extra points. Senior Derek Eumansky (6-0, 170) is a punting option, along with sophomore Ben Millar.
Team position strength: Tight end
Thin at: Defensive tackle
Team speed: 10 Patriots can run the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds
Team strength: Five Patriots can bench press 300 pounds
Team size: Six players over 220 pounds, two players over 250 pounds
Schedule analysis: No Washington County this year, but Westside plays above its classification the first three weeks of the season against Greenbrier, Lakeside and Richmond Academy.
Big game: vs. Richmond Academy, Aug. 20
What worked last year: Ball control when the options in the passing game weren't that sound.
Different this year: Westside appears to more focused in as a team and better on defense than last year.
Great year if: The team christens its shiny new stadium with a win in the opener and never looks back.
Could go bad if: Three losses in a row kill the excitement.
YESS!!! this year we are way better then last year!! But, my freshmen year we only lost 1 game. Well, i'm playin in the powderpuff game vs. the seniors so, we're going to kill them!! We have our first practice on Sunday
